Past years

The fourth annual Donate a Mobile and Win a Trip for Your Class event reached its climax in April 2014. Children from nursery, primary and secondary schools collected a total of 16,275 used mobile phones. A total of 362 schools participated in the project, which was organised by ASEKOL in co-operation with Recyklohraní, o.p.s. Selected functional devices were handed over to organisations working with people with disabilities.

The ASEKOL not-for-profit organisation also organised a charity environmental tournament under the name Mobilcup. The principle of the Mobilcup tournament was simple. Teams of football amateurs made up of 10 players could easily register and then collect as many old mobile phones as possible. The ten best teams advanced to the final tournament where they competed for a trip to the Champions League, football shirts, footballs, supplies of beer and mobile phones. The winners could also pit their skills against a team of such stars as Jakub Kohák, Zdeněk Grygera and Radoslav Kováč. The event culminated in the Concert for a Mobile held in the large hall of Lucerna in Prague. Such popular bands as Wanastowy vjeci, PORTLESS and Viktor Dyk & WAW performed at the concert. In addition to presenting a cheque for CZK 500,000 to the Zelený život foundation to support families in shelters, another incredible success was achieved – the collection of more than 12,000 mobile phones.

This year, the ASEKOL not-for-profit organisation held a collection event for office and state administration employees. Dozens of offices from all regions of the Czech Republic participated in the event. They managed to collect a total of 1,240 mobile phones. ASEKOL donated functional phones to children’s homes and foster families.

Students managed to collect a total of 22,782 old mobile phones within the Donate a Mobile and Win a Trip for Your Class competition. The competition was organised by the ASEKOL not-for-profit organisation together with project partner T-Mobile within the Recycling Games project. A total of 420 schools participated in the competition, and their task was to collect as many used mobile phones per pupil as possible. The winning school received an HP notebook and an adventure weekend stay in the Czech Republic from project partner T-Mobile Czech Republic. The school that placed second went on a single-day trip, and the third-place school received tickets to an event of its choice. As usual, functional collected phones were donated to children in children’s homes.

In 2011, two of ASEKOL’s projects joined forces. Within the Recycling Games school project, ASEKOL announced a special Donate a Mobile collection event through which children themselves brought worn-out and obsolete mobile phones to their schools. The event was a great success with 570 schools participating. As a result of students’ efforts, ASEKOL was able to give special Christmas presents to children in children’s homes. This Christmas they found presents of mobile phones under their trees.

The Donate a Mobile project continued in 2010. Residents of four regions of the Czech Republic handed over 687 mobile phones, approximately one-tenth of which were still functional. Functional mobile phones which ASEKOL received in the collection event were donated to Lejla Abbasová’s Asante Kenya foundation. As a result, some 55 teachers, Asante Kenya foundation project co-ordinators and the most talented students at supported schools in Kenya were given mobile phones.

In 2009, the long-term Donate a Mobile project focused on Brno, where ASEKOL organised with the City of Brno a collection event using pre-paid envelopes. A total of 170,000 pre-paid envelopes were sent to Brno households for the collection of used mobile phones. Over the course of a month and a half, residents sent back more than 2,600 phones. The campaign’s objective was to support the collection and recycling of surplus mobile phones. Another event partner was the organisation Czech Blind United (SONS), which based on the number of collected mobile phones received a financial gift of CZK 50,000 from ASEKOL.

The pilot campaign of the long-term Donate a Mobile project took place at the end of 2008 in the Central Bohemian Region. Residents managed to collect 3,458 mobile phones. Approximately 150 of those collected were functional, and ASEKOL offered these to Czech Blind United (SONS). The remaining phones were handed over for environmentally friendly recycling.
