Feed the Scrapman 2008

The Feed the Scrapman happening was held for the third time at Anděl in Prague. Once again, the goal of the project was to inform the citizens in an entertaining way of the need for separating old electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) and to follow up on the previous years. ASEKOL would like to thank all those who actively participated in the event or at least took note of the program and thus also the topic of taking back and recycling EEE.

During the 4 and a half days when people brought old appliances and fed the Scrapman, they managed to fill 4 large containers with the volume of 15 m3. A total of 9 and a half tonnes of old appliances were handed over, including 77 TV sets, 126 computer monitors, 31 refrigerators, 10 washing machines and other minor EEE.

This discarded EEE was transported for processing to the disassembly and recycling workshop of Pražské služby, a.s.

From September 9 to 13, the inhabitants of Prague brought old electrical appliances to Anděl, where renowned sculptor, Ondřej Sklenář, used them to build a seven-meter sculpture of the Scrapman. For their contributions, everyone received a small gift and a raffle ticket, where they could win an LCD television and other electrical appliances. The sculpture was already completed and ceremonially brought to life in the evening of Thursday, September 11, but people could bring their appliances until Saturday noon. The sculpture was then removed and transported to Vestec near Prague, where it continues to be exhibited on the premises of the treatment operator, Stena Safina. The 2008 Feed the Scrapman happening took place under the auspices of the Chief Executive Officer of the Central-Bohemian Region, Petr Bendl.

Accompanying program

Scrap fashion show

A really original fashion show took place on Tuesday, September 9, 2008, on Zlatý Anděl square in Prague. A scrap fashion show. Well-known personages presented a special collection of dresses manufactured from old electrical appliances. The author of the non-traditional collection was Josef Klír, nicknamed "Czech John Galiano", who designed the models and composed them from old electrical appliances.

The Scrapman was brought to life on Thursday evening

September 11, 2008 will be remembered by the citizens of Prague walking through Anděl thanks to an unforgettable experience. That Thursday evening in September at Anděl in Prague was pregnant with expectations – will the Scrapman come to life today?

The evening buzz was kindled by a magician’s show and the All X band, which even prepared an original recycling song. The full square exploded with applause after seven o’clock when expectations turned into reality. The Scrapman’s heart began to beat and he started breathing. He thus became clear evidence of the fact that electrical appliances live even after they wear out. Up to 80 % of the weight of old appliances can be reused. Therefore, the more we separate waste, the less the environment will be damaged.
